Paperback version of Melissa Shubha Abbott’s captivating historical novel, The Witches of Gloucester, readers are transported to the tumultuous times of the Revolutionary War in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The narrative centers on five clairvoyant and prophetic women—singles and widows—who find refuge in the mystical woods of Dogtown, seeking safety from marauding pirates and British warships.
These women, endowed with extraordinary abilities, rely on their survival instincts and the companionship of their dogs to navigate the perils surrounding them. They create a sanctuary, establishing boundaries of psychic light that serve as protective barriers against intruders. Interestingly, they employ a unique method to maintain control over the roads leading to their haven: charging tolls to travelers; failure to comply results in curses and bad luck befalling the offenders.
As the story unfolds, the women engage in various mystical practices, reading cards and gathering information, which they use as a form of magical currency. Their lineage connects them to a fae heritage, a bloodline rich in ancient wisdom that endures through the generations, with some descendants still embracing the old ways today.
The Witches of Gloucester is not merely a tale of survival but also a profound exploration of women’s strength, community, and the enduring nature of their mystical heritage. Abbott weaves a narrative that highlights the interplay between history and magic, inviting readers to reflect on the legacies that shape our identities and the hidden powers that lie within us all.
This novel blends adventure, mysticism, and historical intrigue, making it a riveting read for those fascinated by the intertwining of the supernatural and the real during one of America’s most challenging eras.
